WALKING IN AWARENESS

On Sunday, December 5th, SOLID (Salt Spring Organization for Life
Improvement and Development) hosted a contemplative walk at the
Salt Spring Center.

Contemplative walking is practiced by stepping slowly and silently,
with consideration given to each breath. The suggested pace is one
step for every inhalation and one step for every exhalation, although
participants are welcome to walk at whatever speed feels most
comfortable. Walking in this way calms mental activity and helps to
clear away the day-to-day preoccupations that prevent us from seeing
what is actually going on. A feeling of interconnectedness often
accompanies this mental clarity. Contemplative walking cultivates an
understanding that “those people” suffering “over there” in Africa,
are actually us and they are right here.

The contemplative walk was held at the Salt Spring Center located
at 335 Blackburn Road. A number of people participated in this very reverent event.
Together we walked in the same way that we respond to the AIDS
crisis: breath by breath, community by community, project by project,
step by step.
