The Power is the People Film

While it takes a hard look at the problems facing the southern African communities, this 50 minute documentary also reflects on the positive impact of twinning communities in Canada with those in Africa. Through hard hitting interviews with Stephen Lewis, Kumi Naidoo, Maureen O'Hara and Minneh Kamau, The Power is the People looks at the global forces that have shaped Africa's past and present. Follow the story of how a small group of committed Canadians work with their counterparts in impoverished communities in South Africa and Lesotho to create a community garden in a township, build a tree nursery in a rural high school, and connect with a support group for women living with AIDS. Through actualities, spoken word performances, choral song, and dance, the film reveals the resilience of African culture to carry on joyfully in the face of adversity. Find out what five Canadians discover about the power of grassroots connections and how simple, effective changes can make such a difference to the lives in the ‘forgotten continent”. From despair to delight, the pendulum swings of day-to-day survival in southern Africa offer the ride of a lifetime.
