PROJECTS Community to Community Shipment
ACT! |
COMMUNITY TO COMMUNITY SHIPMENT Salt Spring Island is sending a container full of much needed items to Ha Makhata village in the kingdom of Lesotho of southern Africa. SOLID is coordinating the collection of items and sending of the container in a joint project with Partners for Others, an organization based in Revelstoke that sends several containers every year to communities in need around the world. The container is due to depart Salt Spring in July for an arrival in the fall (spring in Africa). The container will be received by the Phelisanong project, a center for disabled and vulnerable children and adults run by Mamello Lehlotha, the community organizer introduced to Salt Spring island at last year’s Community to Community conference hosted by SOLID. The entire island has an opportunity to participate in this community to community offering by donating goods and/or funds for the shipment. $12,000 is the fundraising goal for the project to pay for the shipping of the container, while the value of goods inside will far surpass that amount. For a full ‘wish list’ of items that have been identified by the receiving communities as valuable, please see below. Items can be donated at the storage container behind the Community Gospel Chapel at 147 Vesuvius Bay Rd every Saturday between 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm. For questions or other arrangements, please contact SOLID at 537-0863. Items are requested to be in new or near-new condition. Please, no broken down, obsolete or heavily worn items of any kind, no items requiring batteries or electricity and no aerosols or propellants. Please do not leave items after hours at the SOLID office or drop off location. Useful items for shipping include:
