"Make Way for the Living"

The HIV/AIDS pandemic is spreading faster in Southern Africa than in any other region on Earth. An estimated 7 million Southern Africans are now HIV positive. Few have access to drugs that might improve their health and prolong their lives. Most live under appalling conditions of poverty. More than half a million Southern African children are AIDS orphans. Some are HIV positive, others have full-blown AIDS, all are parentless due to the disease.

• Up to 35 per cent of Southern Africans are living with HIV. Most are 30 or younger.
• Over half of those infected are women
• Within eight years there will be 2 million Southern African AIDS orphans.
• AIDS has already reduced life expectancy in some parts of southern Africa to aged 38

Despite the overwhelming numbers and the devastation wrought by this disease there are simple ways in which we can all help. It is shocking how little time, money and effort is needed to improve the lives of those affected and infected with HIV/AIDS. You can make a difference.
